Back in black: Gamecocks show off new throwback uniform

FINALLY

The University of South Carolina’s football program finally realized throwback uniforms not only exist, but are something it’s allowed to wear, as the Gamecocks unveiled their homage to the 1984 Black Magic squad on Tuesday.

The ‘84 Gamecocks, with their famed “Fire Ants” defense, remain among the most successful squads in school history, winning 10 games and toppling foes the likes of Georgia, Notre Dame, and of course Clemson. They closed the season with a No. 11 ranking, although the less said about the Navy game and the Gator Bowl, the better.

I, for one, am absolutely thrilled. I’ve been begging to see some old school flavor on the field ever since the trend started spreading across college football, and I’ve been baffled by USC’s seeming reluctance to take part (although last season’s resurrection of the Carolina script was a great start). It’s true the Gamecocks don’t have an illustrious history to look back on, but you don’t need a stuffed trophy case to have fun with classic uniforms and change things up a bit for fans and recruits.

At first blush, I’ll say this was worth the wait — these uniforms look incredible, especially with authentic touches like the mesh detailing. It’s been a long time since I’ve bought a jersey for any college sport, but I just might have to own this one. What do y’all think?
