Opening Day for the 2018 baseball season is finally here! The Gamecocks open their season with a weekend series against the VMI Keydets that begins today in Founders Park. The Gamecocks are 9-5 against VMI all-time and most recently faced the Keydets to open the 2012 season.
VMI is coming off of a 24-34 season and, like Carolina, is looking to get things back on track this year. The Gamecocks are not entering this season with particularly high expectations nationally, but with a new coach at the helm they have a chance to prove themselves. This opening series will be a chance for the Gamecocks to begin figuring out their best lineup and to answer early questions about the pitching staff, which is this team’s biggest unknown.
Adam Hill will be the Friday starter for the Gamecocks. The junior RHP, who had a 3.04 ERA last season, was the obvious choice for the Friday starting spot as the only returning weekend starter from last year’s team. VMI’s starter will be Josh Winder, another junior RHP.
Sophomore RHP Cody Morris will start on Saturday. He had a 3.66 ERA and started 10 games last season. Brady Watts, a sophomore left-hander, will take the mound for the Keydets.
Sunday’s starter will be Ridge Chapman, a junior RHP making his USC debut. Sophomore RHP Zak Kent will get the start for VMI on Sunday.
Game 1: Friday, 4 p.m.
Game 2: Saturday, 12 p.m.
Game 3: Sunday, 1 p.m.
Watch: Friday’s game will be streamed online on SEC Network Plus. The Saturday and Sunday games will not be available to watch.
Listen: All three games will be broadcast on 107.5 The Game.
