After losing out on grad transfers Mark Alstork and C.J. Bryce, the Gamecocks hope that another high-scoring transfer, Randy Onwuasor, ends up on their roster when it’s all said and done.
Onwuasor, a 6’3” guard from Inglewood, California, told college basketball guru Jon Rothstein that he has scheduled a visit to South Carolina for next Friday, August 4. If he ends up in Columbia, he would be able to play right away.
Onwuasor started with Texas Tech and was part of Tubby Smith’s initial recruiting class in 2013-14, but averaged just 3.5 points per game in 15.3 minutes an outing over two seasons. After transferring to Southern Utah and sitting out due to NCAA regulations, he exploded for 23.6 points per game - the most in the Big Sky and the fifth-highest scoring average in the country - and 6.6 rebounds per game.
South Carolina has some company if they’re to get Onwuasor’s services. Gonzaga has come calling and will host him on August 1. Oregon and Texas Southern have shown interest as well.
If the Gamecocks are able to land Onwuasor, they would add a nice complement for Kory Holden and another grad transfer, Frank Booker. Add rising sophomore Rakym Felder to the backcourt mix and it could soften the blow of losing a starting core of Sindarius Thornwell, PJ Dozier and Duane Notice.
