The South Carolina Gamecocks tacked on another commitment on Saturday afternoon. It's Spartanburg (S.C.) Byrnes wide receiver Chavis Dawkins, the 20th member of the 2016 recruiting class and the fourth wide receiver, behind Bryan Edwards, Diondre Champagne, and Chris Smith.
Dawkins was part of a Byrnes team that lost to eventual state runner-up Dorman in the South Carolina "Big 16" (Class 4A, Division 1) playoffs this past fall. A Shrine Bowl participant, he hauled in six catches and 62 yards to lead all receivers on the South Carolina team. As a senior at Byrnes, he hauled in 30 catches for 546 yards and six touchdowns.
Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, Louisville, N.C. State, Old Dominion and Wake Forest were the other offers on the table for Dawkins, but in the end, the Gamecocks ended up winning his services. Had he ended up selecting ODU, he would have been reunited with his former teammate at Byrnes, current Monarchs starting QB Shuler Bentley.
We've posted a video with Dawkins' commitment announcement below:
