Will Muschamp has locked in another key piece for South Carolina’s 2018 class.
Bradenton, FL running back Deshaun Fenwick, the No. 9 all-purpose back in the nation per 247 Composite rankings, announced his verbal commitment to the Gamecocks on Wednesday night. Another big get for running backs coach Bobby Bentley, he becomes the first back from the class of 2018 to commit to USC.
At 6-foot-3, Fenwick is quite larger than the stereotypical downs back and plays with the physicality of a downhill runner. He has the vision and lateral quickness to exploit holes at the line of scrimmage, and once in the second level, he is an absolute handful to take down for smaller linebackers and defensive backs.
Also a threat in the passing game, Fenwick displays soft hands and the ability to take advantage of mismatches out of the backfield or slot. Right now he is able to rely on his size to win, but look for his routes to become more precise throughout the course of his senior season.
For the Gamecocks, Fenwick hopes to compete for playing time right away. With no running backs in South Carolina’s 2017 class of commits, he will be in prime position to do so.
