North Carolina transfer Diamond DeShields will visit South Carolina this weekend

Ellen Ozier-USA TODAY Sports

The National Freshman of the Year will visit Columbia this weekend as she continues to look for a new program.

If you follow South Carolina women's basketball, then you are intimately acquainted with two facts: the 2013-14 season was one of South Carolina's best ever, and Diamond DeShields was a big reason why it ended.

After helping lead North Carolina to victory over the Gamecocks in the Sweet 16, DeShields surprised everyone when she announced that she would be transferring from Chapel Hill. DeShields confirmed in an interview to InsideTennessee.com that she would in fact be visiting with Dawn Staley this Saturday..

Last year DeShields led UNC with 18 points per game and was honored as the National Freshman of the Year, finishing with an ACC single-season freshman record 648 points.

Considered a strong lean to Tennessee since announcing her intention to transfer, DeShields mentioned that her visit to Columbia this weekend will be her last that a decision on where she will play starting in 2015 will come shortly after. Per NCAA transfer rules, DeShields will have to sit out the 2014-15 season but would provide Dawn Staley with three years of eligibility thereafter.

Along with South Caroilna and Tennessee, DeShields is also considering Georgia as a potential transfer destination.
