Gerald Dixon Jr.

Redshirt Sophomore Defensive Tackle
6'3", 318 lbs.
Rock Hill, SC

Recruitment:
3 stars, 91st defensive tackle in 2010 class
Other offers: Maryland

College Career:
Dixon Jr., whose father played for South Carolina and whose brother is currently on the roster, redshirted in 2011. Last year he saw action in a dozen games, notably hauling in a tipped interception against Kentucky. But Dixon's biggest contribution so far has been in a recruiting capacity. After committing in early 2011, the Dixon brothers' leveraged their relationship with another Rock Hill recruit, likely playing a role in his eventual commitment. (Hey, that article spends two paragraphs touting Tanner McEvoy and Sheldon Royster as future Gamecock stars! Cool!)

2012 Stats:
2 starts, 12 games played
9 tackles
1 interception

2013 Outlook:

Dixon Jr. emerged from spring practice listed as a co-starter with J.T. Surratt (here's his Final Cockdown writeup). Because of Surratt's experience, it's likely the RS junior has the inside track to get a bulk of the early snaps, but Dixon Jr. continues to make his presence known. Junior earned the Everyday Effort Award for the defense in the spring, a testament to his, uh, excellence in the realm of putting forth effort on a daily basis. Gotta like that, right? Anyway, whether or not he locks down that starting role, Junior's primed to see plenty of the field in 2013. And should Kelcy Quarles suffer a Bhujangasana-related glute strain, Deke Adams will have a capable fill-in.

Trivia:

Possible Todd Ellis play-by-play call:
Boyd takes the snap, play action, drops back, can't find a man and he'll scramble, and BOOOM! That's Gerald Junior on the sack! Tajh Boyd will be whistlin' Dixon all the way back to Pickens County!
