In a back and forth affair, the Lady Gamecocks managed to squeak by the Tar Heels of North Carolina and advance to the Elite Eight. After starting the game down 10-3, the Gamecocks came storming back to take a 29-25 lead into halftime. The up and down contest only got more intense in the second half as the Tar Heels and Gamecocks would exchange lead changes several times. Things looked bleak for the Gamecocks as they were down 63-60 with a little over a minute left. It was hard not to think back to last year's game against UNC and say, "here we go again." But, Olivia Gaines hit a clutch three pointer with a minute left to tie the game at 63. With 4.2 seconds left Tiffany Mitchell, who led the Gamecocks with 18 points and 5 assists, made a layup on an in-bounds play to win the game. After UNC's desperation shot fell short, chants of GAME-COCKS could be heard throughout the arena and the Gamecocks sprinted to their fans to celebrate a huge victory for the program.
With the win, the Gamecocks move to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2002 when they lost to Duke. USC will take on the winner of the Arizona State vs. Florida State Sunday at noon.
