Gamecocks football recruiting: South Pointe (S.C.) 2016 WR/DB Chris Smith commits

South Pointe's been pretty good to the Gamecocks, if we remember correctly.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The South Pointe (S.C.) pipeline has paid off for the South Carolina Gamecocks in the past.

Chris Smith joined that list today as he became the latest member of the class of 2016 to commit to the team. Smith apparently liked what he saw and heard at the program's first cookout and pool party, pledging to the staff as a result.

The DB, who put his likelihood at committing today at 85 percent (later 95%) and had the Gamecocks as his only high major offer, decided not to pass on the opportunity to play SEC football. Air Force, Charlotte, Miami (Oh.) and Old Dominion were his only FBS offers coming in.

Smith is the ninth player to commit from the 2016 class. He is a two-star player over at Rivals and joins a long list of players from South Pointe, led, of course, by Jadeveon Clowney, to play their college ball for the South Carolina Gamecocks. While he is being listed as a wide receiver, he's expected to play cornerback at USC.

Stay tuned, because it might not be the only commitment we'll hear of today.
