The South Carolina Gamecocks released their two-deep depth chart in preparation for the North Carolina Tar Heels on Thursday. The list, along with some observations:
Quarterback: Perry Orth is officially Connor Mitch's backup, while Michael Scarnecchia and Lorenzo Nunez are third and fourth-string, respectively. However, Nunez should come in for various formations throughout the game.
Offensive line: Brandon Shell and Mason Zandi are the tackles, Mike Matulis and Will Sport line up at guard, while Alan Knott is the man in the middle. Cody Waldrop is listed as the backup at center, while Shell will be backed by true freshman Christian Pellage, Zandi is backed up by Blake Camper, and Zack Bailey will be behind Waldrop at guard. It's surprising to see three freshmen show up on the offensive line two-deep, but the hope is that they're ready if and when) they're called into action..
Running back: Brandon Wilds is officially listed as starter, but he will split carries with David Williams. Shon Carson remains behind them.
Wide receiver: Deebo Samuel will start ahead of Shamier Jeffrey at one WR slot. Carlton Heard gets the call over redshirt freshman Terry Googer, but Googer should see a good amount of time on the field as well. Pharoh Cooper is backed up by Matrick Belton at the other WR spot.
Tight end: Jerell Adams will start, but with Clayton Stadnik out, we will see two true freshmen, Hayden Hurst and Kyle Markway, behind him. Redshirt freshman K.C. Crosby should get in on the act as well in the rotation despite showing as the fourth-string TE, leaving Jacob August as the odd man out.
Defensive line: Marquavius Lewis, unsurprisingly, will get the call at one end, but an interesting twist will have Cedrick Cooper and David Johnson listed ahead of Gerald Dixon, who is now at third-string. Gerald Dixon Jr. will be backed by Phillip Dukes at one tackle, while Dante Sawyer, the JUCO transfer, will start on the other tackle.
Linebackers: No change here. Jonathan Walton starts at the WILL (backed by Bryson Allen-Williams); Skai Moore (T.J. Holloman back-up) is starting at MIKE. Larenz Bryant (Ernest Hawkins) will be the SAM LB.
Secondary: Chaz Elder (Chris Lammons) and Rico McWilliams (Al Harris Jr.) start at the corners, while Jordan Diggs (D.J. Smith), T.J. Gurley (Jasper Sasser) and newcomer Isaiah Johnson (Chris Moody) are the safeties. (Look for Moody to rotate out with Johnson on occasion.) Lammons was listed as starting LCB in the preseason, but is now behind Elder, who was the backup at strong safety to start camp.
