The Yardcocks, winners of eight in a row, take on the Volunteers for the second of three at 4:00 today. Sam Dyson starts for Carolina and Aaron Tullo (0-0 and 3.52 ERA) for the Vols. Can Carolina break out the bats and take the series? Let's hope so.
We can also chat about our tourney brackets here. The bracket-busting St. Mary's Gaels just pulled off another upset, this time over the Villanova Wildcats. There are some other interesting games this afternoon, including the surprising Ohio Bobcats vs. the Tennessee Volunteers. I'm going with Tennessee in that one. In the other games, I'm going with Murray St., Kansas, Washington, Baylor, Kansas St., and Kentucky. Unfortunately, a good bit of my original brackets are already busted, but what can you do? I know you didn't pick Ohio to beat Georgetown...

I haven't been very successful picking games in the first two rounds,
but I can say that all of my Elite 8 are still in it. I actually had Richmond over Nova, so the upset today probably helped me more than anything.

Not bad so far...
On the hoops front, I’m not doing so great. Unfortunately, my Murray St. pick was a near miss; they just lost by two to Butler after giving up a last-second turnover. I had them in my Sweet 16. Oh well. Like you, my Elite Eight is still intact, though. I’m glad I listened to my glut, didn’t put too much faith the the Big East press machine, and bet against ’Nova and Georgetown (not that I thought the Hoyas would lose THAT early).

Although there's often a good bit of chaos in how the first couple of rounds pan out...
The committee has been pretty accurate in seeding who will make the Elite Eight. There’s usually one team that wasn’t supposed to be there, maybe even a Georgia Mason in the Final Four, but for the most part it’s the teams everyone expected to make it there. And the top seeds almost always make it.

My guess is no.
Tanner like Bangs to a middle reliever, and for good reason. He’s been effective in that role, and that’s probably where we can get the most use out of him. Apparently they handed the closer job to a freshman the last few games who has pretty good stuff.
I’m not really sure on this point, as I’ve been pretty busy lately, but I did catch the last few inning on my way home from work the other night.

I missed it.
I agree on free throws. The other two key stats for me are offensive rebound and turnover differential. It doesn’t matter how much talent you have, if you can’t shoot free throws and you give your opponent 10+ FGA every game, you’re not going to win against good teams.

It looks like I was mistaken. The player I was talking about is Ethan Carter, a freshman who struck out 3 in 1.1 innings of work against Davidson. Bangs actually closed out that game.
