Larry Fedora is talking trash.

In addition to not punishing players for being arrested, Larry Fedora is ready to talk trash about his season opener at South Carolina.  Quote and discussion after the jump.

Star-divide

"The first college football game of the 2010 season is us. So every college football fan in this entire country will be watching us - watching the Golden Eagles beating South Carolina.”

“And I’ve already told the guys when it happens, walk across the field and shake their hands like you expected it to happen.”

“Everybody in here has asked me about the defense. I’m going to tell you right now we are going to have a dang good defense.”

Umm..... OK.  Historically we do tend to struggle a little in opening games, especially on offense.  Given that USM has some good players, especially since they're not getting suspended.  But for a head coach of the Golden Knights to talk trash about coming into Columbia before fall practice starts, well, that's just bad karma.  USM's hopes pretty much rest on us overlooking them, which could happen.  But by coming out with this, he pretty much guarantees that it won't happen.  I understand him telling this to his players to motivate them, but to say it in the media was just stupid.  I guess we'll find out how it works for him.

Not really sure what his motives are here

Yeah, I get it, he expects to win (as any coach should) but unless it is being taken out of some other context that I’m missing here, I don’t know why he said it.

Can't blame him for wanting to win.

Like I said, I understand why he would say it to his team. Its just a dumb thing to say in public.

This isn't too surprising.

Fedora is a good coach, but he doesn’t have too much else to recommend him.

I agree with what you say in closing. USM’s hopes rest on us overlooking them / looking ahead to the following week’s game against UGA, and talking trash like this doesn’t help them there.

We may struggle in opening games,

but that’s because we struggle in pretty much every game. We haven’t lost an opener since 1999.

this

seems rather low class to me… a coach doesnt go to the media and talk trash like this, they should leave that to the fans to do. Call me old school, but a coaches only concern should be his players, not the other team or what he fantasizes about.
