Kratch: USC shows tenacity, avoids disaster | The Daily Gamecock

Surely, this was the death knell. The Chicken Curse had finally picked itself up and dusted itself off after being bludgeoned in the head by Whit Merrifield's aluminum bat in Omaha, Neb., back in the summer and made its way back cross-country, just in time to thwart the Gamecocks as they stood on the threshold of history.

My only qualm with this article? There is no chicken curse.

Security harmed students in defense of field | The Daily Gamecock
This confirms what we all already knew.

From my front row vantage point I witnessed a number of shocking events. The first student I saw successfully make it onto the field was seen just seconds later with blood pouring from his nose and mouth being escorted away by an officer. Another young man jumped the fence right in front me, and when an event staff member tried to simply push him back off the field, a police officer grabbed at him, trying to pull him back onto the field. Many of the officers armed themselves with Tasers and pointed them toward the crowd, and I can't even begin to mention the amount of students I watched get punched at and thrown violently to the ground.

OL Kevin Young knows this feeling all too well. All so we won't pay a $25,000 fine? Let's put that number into perspective.

If you consider the fact that it costs one out-of-state, non-scholarship student roughly $160,000 to attend Carolina for four years, I'm pretty sure the school could have handled the minor setback.

Let's forget for a second that tuition doesn't feed into the athletic department. Seems like this no rushing the field policy is counter-productive to its goals.

it seems counterproductive

to try and save students/fans from traumatic head injuries caused by tearing down the goal posts … by having your security striking them in the head … or tasing them.

by tryptic67 on Oct 12, 2025 7:59 AM EDT reply actions

Absolutely

Imagine the money spent to cover the cost of a lawsuit had one of these students been seriously injured. Sure, the rules said don’t come onto the field, but there’s definitely an excessive force argument to be made.

by Skulls and Spurs on Oct 12, 2025 9:07 AM EDT up reply actions

I'd hate to think it was about money

USC has insurance issued by a quasi-state entity / inusrance pool that would defend all suits and pay claims.

Rules are rules, but once the posts are cranked down, its not a danger to the students/fans nor do I think our kids are going to take a poke at an opposing player.

by tryptic67 on Oct 12, 2025 9:42 AM EDT up reply actions

If it ain't about money somewhere down the line, then what's the purpose?

Protect our athletes by tasing students? Protect an opposing team’s athletes by punching our students? If that insurance is there, why not let everyone charge the field? I’m just throwing out questions because I don’t think there’s a real straight truth answer. Obviously, USC hopes to avoid the $25k fine, but at what expense? I’d be willing to bet that some of those officers are Clemson fans enjoying stealing some thunder from Carolina students by tasing or hitting them.

by Skulls and Spurs on Oct 12, 2025 9:58 AM EDT up reply actions

that is the goofiest thing I have ever heard. Maybe the officers were clemson fans? Com’on man, really? The fans were told before the game that they could not rush the field and if they did so that they would arrested. Once the students crossed the line, they were in violation and able to be charged. The officers have 80,000 people to deal with and can’t really spare multiple officers to chase down a student. I’m a police officer so I know how dealing with a gigantic crowd is. The objective is to get the person in custody as quick as possible and get them out of there, they weren’t clemson fans trying to steal some thunder from the fans. They were doing their job. The fans and students should have upheld the wishes of the university and the football program and not try to rush the field plain and simple.

by Carolina Cock-n-Fire on Oct 12, 2025 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, there's theory --

and then there is reality. Should students try to get on the field when the University and police specifically ask them not to? No. But does a student deserve a bloodied nose and a criminal record for the mere act of hoping a fence? Absolutely not. I’ve also heard of at least one student being thrown over the fence by the people behind him. He didn’t want to go over the fence, but he still got arrested.

The bottom line is it is safer for the University to allow people onto the field in an orderly fashion once the goal posts have been lowered and the opposing players have run off the field. This nonsense about using a small number of law enforcement to contain thousands of students is ridiculous. It’s 1) more dangerous, 2) unfair to the students, and 3) unfair to the law enforcement. It’s a no-win proposition all the way around.

I was on the field after our victory over Clemson in Death Valley (sic) a few years ago and I can say that it was loads safer than what I witnessed last Saturday.

its not very counterproductive. Those officers did not hit or tase anyone who wasn’t under arrest and violating the law. The majority of the students and fans left without injury and thats what the school was going for. The only counterproductive issues came when people decided to disobey the wishes of the university and tried to rush the field. At that point they were in violation of the law and placed under arrest, they put themselves in that situation. For the most part, SC’s plan worked.

by Carolina Cock-n-Fire on Oct 12, 2025 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Also, Skulls, if you read the south carolina state law and federal law, police officers have the +1 statute in the use of force spectrum. This means, if someone is unarmed or attempts to strike a police officer with their fists, the officer can use their tasers, asp batons, or OC spray. There is no excessive use of force. Once they violated the law they were under arrest and if they did not comply or resist arrest, these items can be used. You’ve got maybe 100 or so police officers and a crowd of 80,000 or more. They are severly out numbered and do not have the time or man power to mess around. I personally would have to loved to see USC let the student rush the field, because we have never had such a big upset, but the school did not and it hired law enforcement to do a job and they had to do it.

by Carolina Cock-n-Fire on Oct 12, 2025 10:30 AM EDT reply actions

"if someone is unarmed or attempts to strike a police officer with their fists"

You’re going to have to explain to me how hopping a fence constitutes “striking a police officer with their fists.”

The police officers were given a job and they did it to the best of their ability under the circumstances. But you have to admit that it makes no sense for a college student to be subjected baton beatings, pepper pray, and tasers just for trying to hop a fence. You have to call into a question a policy that basically mandates police are going to have to harm students. And don’t give me this stuff about students having to deal with the consequences of their actions. You know as well as I do that, while you can reason with a person, you can’t reason with a mob.

Being tasered is not an acceptable punishment for rushing the field. I think the officers’ actions in this situation are defensible, but my problem is with the policy that lead to the actions, not the actions themselves.

Well said, FW.

I think the university’s decision is the problem. I have no problem with officers doing their jobs to the best of their abilities, but I also think that, as others have said, this situation was a lose-lose for all involved, university, officers, students, players, everyone. The University showed little foresight into what the reality of this situation would be. Did they really think that putting 100 officers on the field would solve the problem and that no one would rush the field? What happened is a result of poor judgment on the University’s part.

As far as whether or not police officers should be able to use force to stop people, I agree that it seems a bit dubious to call tasers an appropriate plus-one response. However, I can empathize with the way it must feel to have to control a crowd of thousands of students with only 100 or so officers. Like I said, it’s a lose-lose for all involved.

man

coming from a guy who is going to be a police officer in a year or less, let me tell you. There is no sense in arguing that an officer is in the right… they are never in the right to peoples mind, especially in this state where police are looked at as inhuman for their use of force to apprahend people breaking the law.

I have tried to tell people the right thing for years now, it just doesnt work.

by Gamecockrock on Oct 13, 2025 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

It's a one plus response

One level above whatever the, in this case, so called “suspect” is doing. So, officer, how can you justify the use of a taser on a man trying to run by you in celebration of his team’s victory?!? Ridiculous.

by Skulls and Spurs on Oct 12, 2025 11:10 AM EDT reply actions

Based on your earlier comment,

you are telling us that when they hopped the fence they were immediately “under arrest” so the officers took this running by them as an attempt to resist that arrest, so, in turn, they were able to use the one plus force to subdue them? Wow. That’s certainly not there to be used in this type of situation, which is why The Feathered Warrior’s questioning of the policy is the best argument on here.

by Skulls and Spurs on Oct 12, 2025 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

The plus-one is designed to help stop legitimate threats.

And that one kid with the hat on who got bopped on the nose looked like he weighed about 140 soaking wet and probably couldn’t have harmed one of the cheerleaders, much less one of the cops. That said, I can understand the officer’s psychology here. I think that what they were asked to do was unreasonable.

by Gamecock Man on Oct 12, 2025 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree GM.

Everyone was put in a bad spot. The cops had to do a job, but pulling out the tasers was too much. Obviously, many of them thought this as well since they all didn’t elect to go that route.

The charging the field issue needs to be an NCAA nationwide ban or no ban at all, anywhere. It’s tough for kids to watch other schools, including the one in the upstate, rush the field and celebrate after a win and then get told they can’t.

by Skulls and Spurs on Oct 12, 2025 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

No, you're right--tasering is too much. Tasers have killed people before.

One of my future in-laws, btw, is an attorney in Greenville and got an elderly woman who had been roughed up and tasered by the police a pretty nice settlement. There are some pretty awful stories out there.

Garnet and Black Attack: A Blog by and for Gamecocks Fans.

by Gamecock Man on Oct 12, 2025 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree

FW’s correct … its a matter of poor policy. I hope it never happens again. I’m not expert in the use of force, but my understanding is that it has to be proportional in the context of the officer’s safety. No one was going to hurt an officer or an opposing team member … and once both the goal posts were down, no one was going to get knocked on the head that way, either. I would say the biggest “danger” would be someone being trampled … but I think that’’s remote. This certainly wasn’t a riot.

I disagree with silver82blade … police officers are not “evil” any more than any other job that confers power and authority has evil people in it (medicine, law, politics, military service, you name it). I do worry that sometimes some police are too quick to reach for the Taser, or throw a punch or a body slam. While I dont think rushing the field is a sin, I understand the League and the NCAA are against it (and why), and I accept that the University has the police power to say “stay off”. I hate that these kids today are being punished for our fans back in 01 when any excuse was a good one to rush the field.

I would hate if the University moved the student section out of the North endzone and NE corner. It is a big advantage and looks amazing both in person and on TV. Perhaps when we get around to North End Zone renovation, we can address all the concerns in one fell swoop.

by tryptic67 on Oct 12, 2025 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions

just as a side note

the officer isnt only doing this to abide by the law set forth, or protect the players… they also use this force to save lives. Just imagine a group of 20,000+ people running out onto the field, there is bound to be younger people in that group… people dont exactly run around someone, they will just bulldoze whoever is in front of them, which can lead to tramplings, alot worse than a sore nose and a migraine.

by Gamecockrock on Oct 13, 2025 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I still think some of the officers were Tigers ; ) lol

Why not blame “them” folk? A redneck with a badge and a taser at a Carolina game is a bad combo.

Very frustrating that the one of the best and certainly most passionate groups of fanbases cannot celebrate with their teams after a big win.

Back to football ...

… that was a nice story on that 93 year old dude. I’m a little surprised that Jeffery got the National Player of the Week. As great as he did, I thought Garcia did better. He had more than one throw deep downfield while getting pounded, and he delivered almost everything with laser precision. He also converted that 4th down with a scramble to the left. It’s hard to say Jeffery had a better game, but Jeffery should be 2nd on the list of the top player for the week.

Lanning had a great game for us, but it belied the fact that our offense moved the ball all day but couldn’t punch it in the end zone, and that was the difference in the game.

You know, I go off to class...

And the next thing I know silver82blade has high-jacked my thread with this crap.

I thought SB Nation, this blog, and this community, in particular, was sophisticated enough to delineate between a nuanced opinion regarding the SEC’s stance on rushing the field and the hate speech I had to endure in the above. And, yes, I consider sweeping, baseless generalizations like,

You cops are more evil than 90% of the people you arrest.

and

You people don’t know shit about how to enforce laws responsibly or humanely.

to be hate speech. I’d also like to note that I do not appreciate silver82blade’s increasingly gratuitous use of profanity such as:

All you people care about is using whatever force tickles your dicks at the time.

or the forays into politics, religion, and proselytizing. This post was not meant to be your personal sounding board for any of those subjects, and I’m sorry if my discussion of a college student’s bloody nose led you to believe that.

silver82blade, I’m having a difficult time reconciling your, often, incisive commentary on Gamecock football with the clearly inflammatory hate speech you’ve presented to us here. Your seeming indifference to both general human decency and our banning you from this site is deeply troubling to me.

Ban me if you want, but I had to say it!!

You, in fact, did not “have” to say it, and you showed poor judgment in exercising your right to do so. I have no idea what the standards of this blog are, as I have not read them since I joined a couple of years ago, but you can rest assured that your comments today will prompt a discussion between Gamecock Man and me in the near future. I don’t recall our ever having to ban someone before, but you may rest easy tonight knowing that you necessitated our revisiting the policy.

If you can’t tell, I’m pissed. I don’t have the authority on here to delete comments, but I’m sufficiently mad that I’m considering deleting this post entirely. If I wanted to read through this type of drivel I’d visit the GoGamecocks message boards. I intend to send Carolina Cock-n-Fire an apology later tonight, and I suggest you do the same.

I've been thinking about this for a few hours now.

I won’t bother commenting on the main arguments in this thread, because there is no sense beating a dead horse. Trying to defend Carolina Cock-n-Fire’s position or attack silver82blade’s ignorant rant would do nothing but breathe new life in this nonsense.

That being said, I am extremely disappointed that such hateful language is tolerated in this type of venue. And I’m not just looking at silver82blade’s comments. I thought G&BA was a place where Gamecock fans could get together and discuss sports and our university, without such mindless personal attacks. I’m all for academic discussions and opposing views, but this thread jumped over the line in a hurry.

I hope that these comments are not indicative of the type of discussions to come on G&BA.
