Lugoff-Elgin offensive tackle Wyatt Campbell announced Thursday afternoon that he plans to play college football for the South Carolina Gamecocks, making him the eighth verbal commitment of the 2018 recruiting cycle.
Campbell earned a scholarship from USC after impressing at camp in Columbia last Friday. He worked out at Clemson Wednesday in hopes of an offer, but was told that, despite a strong performance, they would not be extending more offers until July.
Clemson likely would have been a strong player, but Campbell was not willing to wait another month, telling The State later on Wednesday that his final decision would be between Virginia Tech, NC State and the Gamecocks.
Offensive line coach Eric Wolford has quietly recruited a strong group for the 2018 cycle. Campbell joins tackle Maxwell Iyama, guard LaMarius Benson and center Hank Manos as the fourth 3-star lineman of the 2018 class.
