Will Muschamp continues to add to his defense for next year. The Gamecocks got a commitment today from Jonathan Gipson, a cornerback from Mill Creek High School in Hochston, Georgia. Gipson stands as the 17th commitment in the 2018 class and the seventh defensive player, joining Dantrell Barkley, Kingsley Enagbare, Jabari Ellis, Ernest Jones, RJ Roderick and Lamarius Benson.
Gipson, considered the 32nd ranked cornerback in the country by 247Sports, recorded 54 tackles, three interceptions and ten pass deflections as a junior in high school last year. He and the Hawks advanced to the state semifinals last year, where they fell to current Gamecock Jamyest Williams and eventual champion Grayson - their only loss of the season. If Mill Creek sounds familiar, it’s because it is the alma mater of former Carolina DT Kelsey Griffin.
South Carolina’s 2018 class has been growing quite rapidly of late: a total of five players have committed in the last nine days. That includes Jesus Gibbs, Tyquan Johnson and Ronnie Jamison pledging in a span of two days. South Carolina also picked up its first 2019 commitment in the person of Ahdarrius Gee over the past week and a half.
