1. Can Stephen Garcia get a little bit better? I'm not going to call his performance bad, but it could have been better. In his defense, though, I think some of the misses on long balls were the receivers' faults.

And is there a QB controversy? Or did Spurrier show confidence in his QB today?

2. Defensively, we're good in the red-zone. But what happens when teams start scoring TDs against us?

3. Marcus Lattimore--how many yards this year?

Quick bites...

Special Teams were fine today.

And in UGA’s defense, I was quite impressed by A. Murray. He will be a huge thorn in our sides in future years.

Yeah, if they shore up their team, that QB will probably win them the conference before he leaves.

Didn’t the guys calling the game say him and Garcia grew up about 3 miles from each other? That was interesting.

stuff 'bout stuff.

That long ball to Jason Barnes should have been caught.

It was pretty obvious that Barnes let up.

Garcia’s major mistakes were the fumble and that huge sack he took. On that sack he had an open out on the left side that he didn’t see. He also took off a couple of times when he should have stayed in the pocket.

On the plus side he has taken care of the ball in the air. And he’s getting better. I mean, I didn’t expect him to have the same performance against an SEC team than he did versus USM.

Still, Shaw needs to continue to improve. If we get a QB (either of them) who can start to win us games and not just not lose them, we’ll scary dangerous. As it is now, I think we’re a better than average SEC team in a down year for the league.

Queries

1. Good question. Garcia did lose a fumble and missed one or two deep balls. He took his sweet time getting rid of it on several occasions. I’m not sure if that was him not finding the open guy, or the receivers not getting open. He wasn’t paying attention to the game clock on a couple occasions, and took some sacks. However, he also made some good plays, and, most importantly, did not throw any picks. I think if Carolina had fallen behind, he’d have put Shaw or Gilmore in and done some more creative things. Garcia was playing just well enough to stay in though. I don’t know if Garcia gets better. He was doing the same things right and the same things wrong as last week. In fact, I’d venture to say he did a little worse. Last week he avoided the rush very well. This week he only did mediocre in that respect. I have to say though, that was a great deep ball to Jeffery between two defenders.

2. Hopefully, that won’t happen. At least, I hope a team doesn’t get into a big shootout with Carolina. Carolina is making too many silly mistakes for that type of thing; blocking and delay of game penalties, and missing wide open guys deep. Georgia is lucky they didn’t lose that game by three touchdowns.

3. It depends on if he makes it to the end of the season. I really hope he doesn’t approach 40 carries a game again, unless the game wholly relies on it. I think he can rack up 100 yards+ per game on a regular basis though. So, minus the post season stuff, I think he can get about 1300 on the ground. He’ll have his fair share of receptions too. He has great hands.

stuff 'bout stuff.

Another topic for discussion

is the play of Chris Culliver. He didn’t have the positive impact I hoped he would have. First there was his bonehead penalty that almost cost us a very important defensive stop. And it seemed like every time I looked up the player he was covering had at least a 5 yard cushion.

Meanwhile, I don’t know if Gilmore had a ball thrown his way the whole game. Anyone remember?

Totally agree about Culliver. Hopefully just first-game-back jitters.

And no, I don’t think they threw to Gilmore’s side. I would expect to see that continue.

I think one of the most important questions is: What does this mean for Miles and Giles, particularly the latter? Those transfer rumors could very well end up coming true. I think there’s still a chance for Miles to stay in the picture, but things are suddenly looking a little crowded with our RBs. Personally, I love having the depth, but Lattimore is such a sensational talent that Giles might see the writing on the wall.

by RumblinFish on Sep 12, 2025 1:20 AM EDT reply actions

I would think Giles will transfer, unless we can find a way to make him a slot receiver or something.

Miles will stick around, and will continue to get playing time in some situations.

I think his yards wont be the impressive thing

It will be his Rushing TD’s… having 240 yards on the ground thru 2 games isnt overwhelming, but having 4 rushing TD’s is pretty nice. I think hes only going to get better as the season progresses, so I could easily see him getting up in the 1200-1400 yard plateu… but like I said his TD’s is going to be most impressive, where I think he will end the season with at least 20 (whens the last time weve seen that???)

Also mark it down, Lattimore will catch Garcia’s first TD pass.

It's the second best possible Sunday morning in the year

1. Waking up with a big W over Jawja puts a big ole grin on my face for a month.

2. Since the Dawg Vent is now a top-secret enclave (a brain trust akin to Langley or Ft. Meade - where intelligence flows thick as honey and cannot be shared with opposing fans lest they learn the secrets of Jawja’s success!), I had to settle with reading the comments at the AJC. Such sweet bathos!

3. The common thread seems to be that its time to end the 10 year love affair with CMR. Woe betide! How many trees in the Peach State have had those magical initials lovingly carved in their bark? How many biceps are tatooed with those talismanic letters? CMR! CMR! Like Scarlett and Ashley, there’s still a chance to start over in Mexico now that their magical world has been destroyed!

4. Every time we beat UGA, it’s usually firing time … Goff … Donnan … now CMR! Well, the grass is always greener in between the hedges until it isnt anymore …

5. Favorite refrain at AJC - “Lattimore is good/ok/special but the difference was our fumble on the 5… and we didnt tackle him so good.” no mention of the 4th quarter drive that tore their throats out and ran down all the clock. No mention that we just had the D sit on a lead. No mention that we went ultra conservative on our play calling and showed Auburn and Bama nothing other than 21 running off-tackle. Hunker down on that bone, Hairy Dawg! I remember saying last year that we tackled so poorly that we made Mark Engram look like a Heisman winner - and lo and behold, he actually was. Funny how that works.

6. One thing that did bother me - was that the 2009 Garcia or the 2010 Garcia? Only one of those sacks, as i recall, was from his blindside. Looks like Steven needs to re-re-dedicate himself to being the 2010 version.

7. Looking forward to seeing how UGA handles Ark. Ark looked pretty mediocre against UL Monroe the first half, but that’s probably meaningless when it comes time for SEC play.

8. Confidential to Spurrier - prior to Furman game, lets show boys film of how it looks when a FCS team beats a FBS team … JMU/VaTech should do nicely - maybe bonus for watching J’ville State knock off Ole Miss. No let down against Furman! Bury them then give them their check.

I certainly appreciate the level headedness we've shown each other this week, Gamecock Man

I don’t know if you read my post game comment over at Dawg Sports that I posted with my iphone on my way back to Augusta, but needless to say, Gamecock fans were in rare form on Saturday. I will never return to Columbia for that reason.

It’s one thing to celebrate your win and rightfully so. Your team won a big game and certainly outplayed us on Saturday. I will not argue with that.

It’s another to say vile things to my sister such as “You’re a c**t Dawg” and “Dawg b***ch”, to dump a beverage on my head as i exited the West gate, to have many young men (presumably frat guys) jump in mine and my sister’s face and yell “F**k the Dawgs”, to have old men waving at me as I exited the stadium smiling and telling me “to get used to this”, and to have another man shove his hat in my face and tell me to “respect this” after I made eye contact with him on the way out and said “good game”.

I feel that Gamecock fans should be ashamed of the way those in attendance acted on Saturday. I’ve been to games at every SEC stadium outside of Gainesville and have never experienced that much nastiness or rudeness, win or loss.

Unfortunately, every fanbase has these “idiots”, but the fact that I experienced them firsthand has now tarnished my view of all Gamecock fans which I now consider to be the worst in the conference. Spurrier has attempted to change the culture of a fanbase that wasn’t used to winning big, and based on these comments and actions directed at myself and my sister on Saturday never was it more apparent that Gamecock fans are not used to this winning thing and don’t know how to treat their visitors with some sort of decency.

I certainly respect you Gamecock Man and will remain cordial with you as you’ve always shown me respect and cordialness, but I will be openly rooting against your team in every game they play this year. It was unfortunate because Saturday should have been remembered by me as one of the biggest wins in Gamecocks history, however now I’ll always remember it as the game that made me lose respect for the opposite fanbase in a rivalry I used to cherish.

Damn...

I’m really sorry to hear that, particularly the comments towards your sister, which were far beyond uncalled for by any measure. I really hope your experience wasn’t representative of what happened to the other UGA people that attended, and unfortunately I couldn’t be there to try to represent the University in a more positive fashion. It’s a real shame that a group of douchebags had to ruin your trip to the game that way—I don’t believe those people are representative of USC, anymore than I think the worst UGA fans are representative of UGA, but I know that doesn’t change how it makes you feel.

There seems to be something about this series that really gets both sides worked up into a lather. Taking a quick scan of some of the UGA blogs I read, I can’t remember how many times I’ve read Columbia referred to as a dump, people wishing that Lattimore would tear his ACL, etc. And now I hear that a decent opposing fan like you was treated poorly after the game.

It’s really a shame. If you’re reading this, folks, please—be respectful to opposing fans. Act like we’ve been here before, even if we haven’t very often.

Just sad. This really pisses me off.

I should, BTW, say that the "it happens everywhere" argument...

doesn’t hold much water with me. It’s true that it happens everywhere—most Gamecocks fans have had some bad experiences with UGA fans, for instance. But does that make it any better? Is it seriously a major challenge to act civilly to opposing fans that take time and money to come visit your school, and for whom an impression means everything? Come on, folks, let’s get it together. I hope we have more big home wins this year, and I hope that I don’t have to hear anymore stories like this.

I remember when I moved from Alabama to USC to go to school and many people I knew who had been to games to support Auburn or Alabama told me about how wonderful the game day experience was in Columbia. That’s something to be proud of, folks. Let’s try to uphold that reputation.

There's really no excuse for the things said to your sister.

Victory or not, liquor or not, there ought to be a common thread of humanity that binds us at even our most haughty of moments. I offer my sincerest apologies, although I realize it will make little difference.

Still, I don’t think that’s a fair characterization of Gamecock fans in general. The fact the we rarely beat UGA - and beating you when we’re supposed to is even rarer still - probably played a significant role in the absurdly rude behavior you and your sister were subjected to on Saturday. Not that that is an excuse, I’m just simply offering a plausible reason why what you witnessed was a significant departure from the mean. Our fans have a lot of experience losing with dignity, but winning with it - well, that’s another matter. If we’re fortunate enough to beat you again in 2011, I would imagine the general demeanor of our fans will greatly improve during our victory celebration in 2012. :-)

As for everything else you mentioned, I’m not sure our fans are any worse than those of other schools. I, too, have traveled around the SEC and could share some stories with you. Like the time we beat UGA in 2007 when some drunken frat boy actually punched one of our sousaphone players and started a melee. Or during that game when at least two open, full bottles of dip spit were launched in the band block by UGA students. Or that same night when I was told a had to wait outside my girlfriend’s apartment building for some other drunken idiot to pass because if he merely even saw me, he wouldn’t be able to control himself and fly into a blind rage ( I was in my USC band uniform at the time). Or the hundreds of people that feel the need to bark directly in my face as I enter Sanford stadium on any occasion. Or the UGA fan that ripped off my dad’s car antenna after a loss. Or the time at Tennessee when fans threw raw chicken at us. Or every away game I’ve ever been to that I’ve had to endure not-funny-at-all, hackneyed “cock” jokes. Or one time at Arkansas where I met the most obnoxious, loud-mouthed, fat jerk who has ever had the pleasure of obstructing my view (no, it was not Houston Nutt).

My point is, like it or not, these are pretty common occurrences in the realm or college football. Are these actions deplorable? Certainly. Do I think these are representative of the fan bases as a whole? No. But do I think you have the right to hold it against us anyways? Absolutely.

Still, I hope that you’ll come around and give Williams-Brice another chance. We’re so close that it would be a shame to write off that trip every other year for eternity. And if you do decide to come back in 2012, please let me know and I’ll be sure to introduce you to a more hospitable group of opposing fans. Once again, I’m sorry that your experience was so poor.

Totally agreed.

Moral of the story for AuditDawg: don’t let the 2% of idiots that exist in every fanbase ruin everything for you. You definitely have a right to be pissed, but it’s a little unfair to think the offending fans are indicative of the rest of us or of what will usually happen when you go to a game at the W-B.

Moral of the story for the offending fans: you should have your fanhood permits revoked.

Meant to add

That Lattimore kid is plain nasty. He’s going to be a good one. He and Ellis Johnson completely dominated us in that game.

I really do appreciate the kind words, guys

And I really believe I’m one of the more reasonable UGA fans out there. I certainly wouldn’t wish what happened to me to happen to anybody that enters Sanford Stadium yet I know it happens every weekend and that saddens me. Stuff like that makes me question why I should even bother to attend games anymore. Why should I spent hundreds of dollars on tickets, gas, hotels, and food? Why should I dedicate 8 hours of my day when I can just as easily enjoy it from the view of my chair in AC with HD tv and my own bathroom and not have to potentially deal with that crap?

I mean to add that after the whole hat shoving in face incident, I also asked the guy two questions:

1: Me - “Do you go to school here?”, Him - “No”
2: Me - “Did you graduate from here?”, Him - “No”

That to me is a huge part of the problem of these pest fans every program has. They’ve got no attachment to the University other than football so they have no reason to represent the University well since they don’t have a degree contingent on the reputation of that University.

Either way, maybe I’ve overreacted with the sweeping generalization, but it’s really hard to not hold it against you guys since as I stated earlier that I tend to believe I’m a pretty reasonable and rational guy that doesn’t instigate fights and the such. Just like I wouldn’t blame either of you guys for holding it against UGA fans for your similar horror stories at Sanford Stadium.

If you guys are in Athens next year, let me know and I’ll make sure you get to meet a decent group of UGA folks so you don’t have to go through that same kind of crap either.

Definitely.

My girlfriend is getting her PhD at UGA, so I’ll be at that game if schedule permits. We’ll have much to discuss as I will just be beginning my own career in auditing at that point. Looking forward to it already.
