I just heard something that urked my nerve....

I guess now that we have become more nationally exposed, teams have decided our "pump up" music is so great that they will use it also.

I know we have no rights to the music, but Sandstorm is as much a part of South Carolina tradition as 2001, or the GAME - COCKS cheer.  Yes it is a bit nit picky, but its annoying to hear it at other stadiums all of a sudden.

Be creative people!!!

I never liked "2001".

As Frasier Crane once said of it, that’s so cliche. That’s the tune everyone in the world used to use, in every facet of society, when they were unveiling something important. It’s been overused so much that I haven’t even heard the tune anywhere the last five or ten years except for our stadium. I just think it makes us look unoriginal and uncreative.

I think some year someone ranked that as the best entrance in college football. I have never disagreed with someone more. I don’t know much at all about other teams’ entrances, but I can think of half a dozen off the top of my head that are better, and I only know anything about half a dozen, not counting ours.

stuff 'bout stuff.

I don't think any Carolina or non-Carolina fans will agree with this...

But you are, of course, entitled to your own opinion.

Which are these half a dozen?

Alright, I exaggerated.

I actually don’t even know what a half dozen other teams do. Maybe that’s ‘cause there is a massive lack of good entrances, I don’t know. I do know of two that I think are better though. And, frankly, I think the piece of music is so overused I imagine I would rank almost any entrance I saw over ours, regardless of how boring it was.

Auburn’s thing with the eagle is cool. Florida State’s Native American riding the horse looks awesome. I like that one the best of the few I’ve seen.

stuff 'bout stuff.

Yeah,

1) I can’t think of any entrances that are better off the top of my head (biased, I know, I know)
2) If you only hear it at USC games how is it overused or “cliche”
3) I think the over-the-top grandiose nature of the song fits right in with college football in general

I think if you ask 100 people, way over half would say that tune is cliche.

I’m not alone in this. I just did a quick google search for “top pieces of cliche music”, and this link was first on the list of results. The tune is number one on his list.

I don’t hear it as much today as I did growing up in the ‘80s and ’90s, but it has been ruined for all eternity due to how much it has already been used by people. Maybe after we stop using “2001” we can use “Eye of the Tiger” from “Rocky III”, or “We Are the Champions”. Those haven’t been used very much.

stuff 'bout stuff.

im sure half of those 100

would probably not know what that song is if you told em the title and asked if they know it

I think that if you asked 100 people

about the tradition of playing 2001 relative to Carolina Football, I don’t think they would call it cliche. But since neither of us are going to take a simple random sample of football fans, we’ll just have to agree to disagree.

I didn't know Andy Rooney posted here!

I can’t imagine a Cocks fan who doesn’t embrace 2001/get chills watching it.

2001 has been used by Carolina since 1983 so I don’t see how it is unoriginal.

I also can’t say Sandstorm is as much apart of Carolina as 2001 considering Sandstorm was released in late 1999 and thus has only been adopted fairly recently. Not to mention that it’s been played in every single night club since the early 2000’s. I find it hard to believe that Carolina would of been the first sports team to adopt it. I swear I’ve heard it at several other sporting events, but if Carolina was in fact the first one to use, all it means is Carolina is a trend setter. Sandstorm is an easily replaceable song and if other teams have started to adopt it, it’s time to find something else.

'Cause everyone has used it for everything for the past 42 years.

It has to be one of the most cliche pieces of music in world history, right up there with Handel’s “‘Hallelujah’ Chorus”. It’s been way overused. It’s time to let it lie, and only bring it out once in a blue moon. Otherwise, it doesn’t impart the same emotion. Of course, I realize I’m probably alone in this assessment. People cling to traditions all the time even when common sense is telling them the tradition is lame.

Traditions aren't about common sense and rationality.

Carolina fans get jacked up when they hear 2001. That’s really the end of the story.

doesnt matter if other venues have used it before

it is a STAPLE of Gamecock games.

True.

We may not have been the first to use it, but we’re the ones who use it best.

Yeah, it's probably just different for me 'cause I've only been watching football for seven years.

Nothing is really a staple to me as far as Carolina football goes. Plus, I don’t care about traditions like most folks. If it were me, I never would’ve started using it 20+ years ago, but what’s done is done, and people enjoy it for some reason, so whatever. I guess I’ll have to deal with it.
