Saturday Afternoon Game Thread

OK, folks. If you're like me, you're about to settle in and watch a few football games. You're probably not like me in that you might not be grading papers during the commercials, but that's OK. What we hold in common is what's important, and that's enjoying some big games this afternoon--the Cocktail Party, Michigan State at Iowa, Mizzou at Nebraska, and others. This thread is the place to chat about these games.

And if you didn't already know, Clemson sucks.

I'm just glad I get to repost my strikethrough list

Most hated:
1. Clemson - HA-HA
2. Tennessee - I still wish we’d let Shaw go for 45 points
3. temporarily vacated by Georgia
4. Notre Dame - their NBC halftime show is talking about the NFL. Go Tulsa.
5. Southern Cal - I can deal with them winning just to ruin Oregon’s season

Anybody else watching Florida-Georgia?

I’m starting to think these teams don’t like each other.

Fantastic play there

if Georgia had just fallen on the fumble inside Florida’s ten, they might have taken control of the game early and seen Florida implode.

Amazing how Florida can throw that back shoulder pass towards the corner of the endzone.

I wish our guys would look at that and learn.

The throw wasn't that great

It looked like a pick before Thompson’s great adjustment.

That was almost as spot on as when I called the game-sealing INT in the Super Bowl last year.

Looked to my friend and said, this is where Manning usually throws an INT. Whala! Pick-six.

Of course, if the Bulldogs do manage to come back and win this,

the Gators could really collapse. It’s not like the players or coaches have experience dealing with adversity.

If Georgia received an average number of breaks against Carolina and Florida,

neither of those rivalries would be so one sided. I think the old “breaks even out over the course of the season” thing, is condensed to two games for Georgia: ridiculous lucky breaks and bounces your way against South Carolina, but you have to give them all back in Jacksonville.

Dang, Florida is going to win the division again this year.

I can just feel it in my bones. All they have to do is get past us. We’re going to get steamrolled. We can’t play well on the road, and Florida gets ice in their veins when it comes down to a make or break moment. We’re doomed!!

by silver82blade on Oct 30, 2025 8:55 PM EDT reply actions

Relax

No looking forward to UF. We gotta beat the Hogs first. And that means we’ve got:

(1) to figure out what in the sam-hell is going on with Stephon Gilmore … he just doesn’t look like he did last year;

(2) figure out how we can get our safeties to pick up their game. Can we please consider movng over WR’s who aren’t seeing PT (Deion LeCorn … what about Scruggs) to shore up a unit that is underperforming?

Aint it awesome?

Im not being totally ironic or tongue-in-cheek. These Cocks seem to play up in a big game where people say they’ve got no chance. Georgia, at Auburn and Bama all are proof of that (and, yes, I know we stunk it up in the fourth on the Plains of East Alabama, but its clear to me that Garcia had a concussion, and Connor Shaw simply wasnt ready).

Anyhow, we only lost by the margin of a TD (and a missed point after), which wasn’t quite as good at Clemson’s margin-of-loss, but better than most who’ve ventured into Jordan Haire stadium this year.

grins. I also know that Carolina has struggled in this stretch during Spurrier’s tenure … but that we seem to snap out of the funk around this time. I dunno. I think its more the bourbon!

Good luck against the Rams tomorrow. I’m badwaggoning the Falcs this year, nothing personal. Last year I liked the Vikes. (I find not having a pro team helps keep the stress down… ).

I'm glad Auburn and Cam Newton are enjoying themselves so much ...

because next year they are (1) at Clemson … (2) at Carolina … (3) …at Arkansas …. (4) at LSU …. (5) at UGA …. that is a murderous away schedule for 2011.

I wonder (if there is no suicidally stupid NFL lock-out) whether Newton goes straight to the pros? Especially if he wins the Heisman … and/or the NC?

If he comes back, he is more likely to hurt than help his draft stock.

They also lose eight starters on D (Fairley’s gone). If we lose to them next year, I will be ticked off. I just hope they make it to Columbia undefeated and still overranked.

Grins. I want to us to beat UFat the Swamp … take it from ‘em at their place. Unless UF lays an egg against Vandy. Either way, I like seeing he Dawgs humbled. Even if it’s only to make Brandon Shell feel better about committing to USC.

I guess its possible

UGA could upset Aubie on the Plains. It is a big rivalry game. But I dont think Grantham’s going to be figuring out Newton while stil installing a 3-4 without the right personnel.

One thing about the Gators’ win, though. Rainey is charged with a felony. Yes, he gets it pleaded down to a misdemeanor, but I lost a lot of respect for Urban bringing him back. Compare and contrast to Richt dismissing Mettenberger outright for drunken groping, which was always a misdemeanor. Some of the shine has worn off Urban … and its more than just losing Dan Mullen to Mississippi State.

I think Mark Richt is a good and decent human being, and suspect Urban Meyer is probably not.

I didn’t have much respect to lose for Meyer. He sat on the Jarvis Moss drug test results until after our game, then suspended him for a 1-AA patsy the following week.

Urban strikes me as the kind

who believes that to desire an end means a willingness to accept whatever means are necessary to achieve it. I never thought of that before, but then Tebow allowed Urban the luxury of playing the good guy, and Kiffin’s out-of-line anti-Urban b.s. was only grist for the mill.

Had the Gators not been scrutinized for so many arrests, or Rainey not so publicly s*** the bed on a character issue, I doubt he’d have been held out even five games.

If you let it go for too long, that image of anything to win will eventually hurt a school’s image. Look at Miami, Tennessee, and even Florida State.

Football coaches are bad at math

In the same game, Baylor scores with over 14:00 left in the game to go up 23-19. They go for two to get a six point lead. This was a 50-50 proposition to get to a situation where they would still be a single score from losing to a Longhorn TD and XP (98%).

It was also 50-50 to put them in a situation where another Baylor TD (which they scored six minutes later) would leave them with only a less than two touchdown lead. They failed on their conversion attempt, which leaves UT within a FG and TD + the conversion at 30-19.
