Tennessee at South Carolina Post-Game: Summing Up the Victory Over the Vols
My apologies for not getting this up sooner and for its brevity. I've had some personal issues to deal with today that have made it difficult for me to devote much time to the blog.
If my post yesterday afternoon made it seem like I'm a little down on the team after the way they played yesterday, I should say now that we really have a great deal to be happy about after beating Tennessee 38-24. After all, this was only the fourth time that we've beaten the Vols since joining the SEC, and that means something regardless of whether or not the Vols are down, because it's important for us to achieve a sense that we're the third best team in the division. We also beat them by a fairly convincing margin; although the game had some tense moments, the final margin of victory was the second-largest for us in this series in the modern era. It was a convincing win, and maybe the burst of confidence that we should have gotten from the second half will carry over into the Arkansas game. It's also worth noting that we're now bowl eligible, which makes this the seventh straight year that we've been so. That's a good run relative to this program's history.
All of that said, we've clearly got our work cut out for us if we're to make it to the SEC Championship Game. After what happened in Jacksonville, we're going to have to beat Florida, and while I still think the Gators are beatable, it certainly appears that the return of Chris Rainey has provided a measurable boost to the UF offense. We're also going to have a tough road to hoe next week against Arkansas. If we can't figure out something quick for our pass defense, Ryan Mallett and his receiving corps may eat our team for lunch. Unfortunately, I think the big problem at this point is just poor execution on the players' part; I've now seen us play fairly poorly out of both soft and more aggressive coverage schemes, suggesting that maybe scheme isn't really the problem. That means that it's probably not going much better this year, other than if our guys show up and out of the blue have a great game, as was the case against Alabama. Beating Arkansas would certainly go a long way in my book towards making this a successful season; the Florida win now means that the the Arkansas game is immaterial to the SEC East title, but I think we can all agree that a win over the Razorbacks would be a nice addition to this season's resume.

I hate that
mathematically we do not need to beat the Hogs to still have a shot for Atlanta.
I think this Arkansas game is critical if nothing else for pride. This will be the senior’s last SEC home game. The Hogs beat us last year and we should always pay back a loss. That goes double for the offensive coaching staff, starting with the HBC down, because the Arkansas game plan was terrible and the second half adjustments worse. Finally, we’ve had a great home stand these last two seasons (only losing to Tim Tebow’s Gators) and a perfect home record means something … not only to the fans, but to recruits.
We’ve had our slump … three games that coulda, shoulda been a 3-0 run but look like a lackadaisical 2-1. It seems like this October malaise is becoming a tradition at USC (one that needs to be stamped out). The good news is that we’ve managed to come through with only our pride damaged so far, not our post-season hopes. But if we continue mediocre play and mental errors, then we’ll finish the run up to the Florida game a ho-hum 2-2. Same old USC, they’ll say.
We always seem to play Florida tough as we can, which speaks well of the team historically even if our best still resulted in a whuppin’. But I think if we drop to the Hogs then we’ll lack the momentum and confidence needed to beat UF at the Swamp. We’ve got to rekindle some of that magic of the Bama game. And we’ve got precisely one week, in my estimation, to turn the trick.
Otherwise, we’ll look back to 2010 as the year that we let slip, slip, slip away …

I dont know
we have responded to losses well, after losing to Auburn we came in and manhandled Bama… then after the UK loss, the defense had one of its best games of the season shutting down Vandy and only giving up 7 points.

Well...
Arkansas’s crappy defense also managed to shut down Vandy. I’m not sure how much stock I’d put into that performance. Vandy has almost no offense.

I'm more afraid of us winning against Arkansas, and then letting up after the big win and lose to Florida.
stuff 'bout stuff.

Before the year started...
i believed we would beat Arkansas at home and lose to Florida. Right now I am dreading a 2-2 finish of the season with 2 home wins and 2 road losses. Really hope we do better than that.

If we lose to Clemson at this point...
Then I’m calling this season a failure. Road or not, they don’t have a good team, and we have no business losing to them this year.

I agree with that statement.
my statement has more to do with past results than the caliber of the team that Clemson is. Clemson really does seem to be struggling this year though.

Didn't they take Auburn to the wire?
That’s the only partial game I’ve seen of them this year, and they looked really physical and fast. Maybe they’ve played poorly for most of the season, but you know they give us their best game every year.
stuff 'bout stuff.

True. They oftentimes save their best game for us...
They’ve been really bad this year, though. They may have played Auburn close, but that was probably the high point of their season, and it was still a loss. Their team has fallen apart down the stretch and the fanbase is in meltdown mode, with many of them ready to fire Dabo after he took them to the ACC Title Game a year ago. We’ll see, I guess.
