Chick-fil-A Bowl Florida St. Seminoles Information Pack

Chick-fil-A Bowl: Florida St. Seminoles vs. South Carolina Gamecocks

FSU Record: 9-4

The Seminoles lost games to Oklahoma, NC State, North Carolina, and to VA Tech in the ACC Championship Game. Their best wins were convincing victories over good-but-not-great Miami, Maryland, and Florida squads. Common opponents between FSU and USC are Clemson and Florida. The Noles beat Clemson 16-13 off a 50+ yard FG as time expired and blew out Florida 31-7.

FSU Key National Rankings

Rushing Offense: 42nd

Passing Offense: 61st

Total Offense: 55th

I know Christian Ponder is good, but these offensive numbers shouldn't strike fear in our hearts.

Rushing Defense: 25th

Passing Defense: 67th

Total Defense: 41st

Scoring Defense: 25th

Sacks: 2nd

This number worries me a bit. The Auburn game reminded me of why I used to worry about Stephen Garcia when he's facing a good rush. Our line will need to play better than it did against Auburn.

USC-FSU Series Record: 3-15

The Gamecocks and Seminoles used to square off fairly regularly from the late 1960s to early 1990s. The Noles, as the series record indicates, dominated the series, particularly in the 80s, when FSU rose to become a national powerhouse. The Gamecocks notched a notable victory over FSU in 1984 en route to a 10-2 season.

I've decided we should win this thing by 10.

Paige's sparking personality is intoxicating; her beauty breathtaking; her intellectual prowess incomprehensible to mortals. Her radiance...her luster...drive men mad. Her omnipotence dangerous, yet alluring. It is her power that ensures gravity remains constant; her genius that inspires. She is not only responsible for the Earth's rotation, but may cure what ails the heart with a glance. I am Paige's pool boy...a serf to her ladyship. I am at her beck and call. I bow to her. I am not worthy. War Eagle.

Should be a good game if we bother to show up.

FSU's offense >>>>> our defense

FSU has faced the #1 set of defenses in the country and about the #50 set of offenses. Have to consider opponent.

This team will improve in '10... on its 16-16 conference record over the last 4 years.... after losing 20 games in the last 4 years... after having the 7th worst major-conference defense... after not even winning its own division in the ACC in the last 4.

I respect FSU

but I don’t see how FSU has faced the #1 set of defenses in the country. End of season NCAA total defense standings for Florida State and South Carolina FBS opponents, from worst to best are as follows:

Seminoles FBS opponents: Wake Forest (102), Virginia (77), Oklahoma (58), Maryland (46), Virginia Tech (40), NC State (35), BYU (33), North Carolina (32), Clemson (23), Miami (16), Boston College (14), Florida (9). Average of opponents rankings: 44.

Gamecock FBS opponents: Vandy (94), Troy (93), Tennessee (70), Southern Miss (55), Auburn (54), Kentucky (46), Arkansas (34), Georgia (30), Clemson (23), Florida (9), Alabama (6). Average of opponents rankings: 47

The Noles faced four top 30 defenses; so did South Carolina - except USC faced two top 10 defenses.

The Noles faced 3 ranked teams in the season (OU, UM, VaTech). The Gamecocks faced 5 ranked teams (UGA, Auburn (x2), Alabama, Arkansas, Florida).

The Cocks played 11 regular season games against opponents invited to bowls (including two games against BCS bowl-bound teams). The Noles played 9 regular season games against bowl-bound teams.

Again - all in all - looks pretty even to me, with perhaps a slight edge to Carolina.

PS - you’re welcome for softening up the Gators.

Number one set of Ds might be a stretch...

But there are some good ones in there…Clemson, UNC, Miami, etc.

FootballOutsiders says so

Carolina played the 21st-best set of defenses.

You're using total defense, which is not adjusted for opponent.

How does CFB Outsiders make that adjustment?

I don’t mean to be an SEC homer, but I have trouble believing that opponent adjustment shouldn’t favor the SEC in this case.

We might not beat FSU.

But I chuckle at the idea that ACC defenses are superior to the ones we faced.

Likely because Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Troy, and So. Miss do not have top-40 defenses this year. Bama, Clemson, Arkansas, and Florida do.

So. Carolina definitely played tougher offenses. In fact, South Carolina played the toughest set of offenses in the country http://footballoutsiders.com/stats/feidef2010 (I am projecting they will jump from #2 toughest to #1 toughest after they update, since you had Auburn again).
