The Lattimore Factor

2 months ago: South Carolina players huddle prior to an NCAA college football game against Vanderbilt on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010, in Nashville, Tenn. (AP Photo/Frederick Breedon)

While an injured Marcus Lattimore watched from the sidelines in Nashville, Brian Maddox ran all over the Commodores in a Carolina victory.  Maddox totaled 146 yards on the ground, second most by a Gamecock for rushing yards in a game this season.  Only Lattimore's 182 yards against Georgia is better.  Prior to his injury at Kentucky, Lattimore had been spectacular in his freshman year for Carolina.   What does his return this weekend mean to the South Carolina Gamecocks?

I said minor

Only because its Tenn. I’d like him to see limited playing time Saturday so that he is healthy for Arkansas.

by Charlestowne on Oct 26, 2025 8:05 PM EDT reply actions

hes supposedly 100% now

and the injury was a fluke freak of nature occurrence. We cant hold him out or be timid to play him due to the chance of injury. He is WAY to talented.

I'd be as happy as anyone to see us wax UT...

But until it actually happens, I’m not going to be too confident about us blowing these guys out, and I hope our players aren’t, either. We’ve not had enough success against Tennessee to assume too much in this game, big point spread or not. I want Lattimore in and playing hard.

I voted for “big” because I think that, as long as our coaches don’t freak out, we can be a good team with Maddox at tailback, and I don’t think you can vote “major” unless you think that Lattimore is going to be a huge improvement over Maddox. That said, Lattimore is decidedly better, and I’m glad he’s going to be back.

Maybe there is a healthy balance

they can use Marcus for x number of carries per quarter, depending on the score. It would be nice to see Marcus resting in the third while Brian Maddox or Kenny Miles beats down the DL, then bring Lattimore in for the fourth and absolutely wear the other side out..

They wore garnet helmets.

by tryptic67 on Oct 26, 2025 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions

yes

I think Maddox has earned his share of meaningful carries in games… its time we move to a 2 back offense, rotating em every 5-6 carries.

But as we have seen from the 2nd half of UK and 1st half of Vandy, Marcus is a large enough part of our offense, that he should be considered at worse a Big Impact to our team as a whole.

I feel though that he is a Major Impact, simply put because when hes played we have dominated 1st halves against some of the better teams in the nation (i.e. Auburn, Bama). But that is not to devalue any of our backup RB’s as they have both proven they can run (Miles did it with a worse o-line than we have this season), or any other player on the team. You just simply cannot deny the evidence that he at the least receives so much attention from defenses he opens up so much else on offense.

But according to the 2nd half of Vandy, maybe Maddox should be our 2nd half back? Worth a try at least.

by Gamecockrock on Oct 26, 2025 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I definitely think we should rotate a second back in a bit more...

Maybe not every 5-6 carries, as I think you have to keep your best player on the field as much as possible. But when you have a good backup like Maddox, I think you have to use him to keep number one nice and fresh. As you say, a series in the second quarter and one or two in the third would be great.

I think I would agree with that. Lattimore is a dual threat back but, he can’t run every play of the game and expect to stay healthy and rested.

by Carolina Cock-n-Fire on Oct 27, 2025 8:52 AM EDT up reply actions

I think he'll have a bigger impact in the passing game than running.

The only thing Lattimore has over Maddox in the run game is his ability to bounce off tackles. However, I think Maddox has a little more power to push through defenders, so the advantage to having Lattimore is minimal in my opinion. Lattimore has rare hands for a back though, so I think that’s where he breaks away from Maddox the most. Maddox can catch too, but not as well as him. Anyway, I said minor.

stuff 'bout stuff.

Yeah, I expect us to see Lattimore get more and more involved in the passing game.

You could see that that was the case early on against Kentucky.

Garnet and Black Attack: A Blog by and for Gamecocks Fans.

by Gamecock Man on Oct 26, 2025 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I doubt we will see him more involved in the passing game than he was in the UK game

Jeffery and Gurley has asserted themselves as the go to receivers. Lattimore will be a nice dumpoff option, but its hard to really see him taking over the receiving game, and quite frankly I hope he doesnt… its best to keep Jeffery/Gurley and them guys happy and catching passes every game.

by Gamecockrock on Oct 26, 2025 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think it's necessarily a case of him becoming more involved than Jeffery or Gurley.

That won’t happen. But when you have a tailback who can catch like he can, that wheel route play can become deadly, especially when you have receivers like ours, who are always going to get a good bit of attention from the defense. Plus, as you say, Lattimore is so very valuable on dump offs. Having him as a safety valve takes a lot of pressure off Garcia.

by Gamecock Man on Oct 26, 2025 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions

yea

the wheel route showed its deadly results in the UK game, Lattimore was wide open on 2 or 3 of those and took one to the house. What makes it so much more valuable, is that the RB can get lost in the receiving game much more than the slot guy or a wide out.

by Gamecockrock on Oct 26, 2025 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly.

I think Lattimore is clearly better even in the run game

he not only bulldozes defenses, he runs proper, and always falls forward… you dont get compared to the likes of Herschel, Emmet, and Bo as a True Freshmen for no reason. Maddox is a GREAT RB, but I dont think anyone will make that comparison.

Lattimore also ran all over the UGA defense, which since that game, we have found out is a REALLY great rush defense… and obviously, you take away his 182 yards, their rush defense is MUCH better.

Also, Latti is a True Freshmen Heisman candidate (although he may no be now), anyone who thinks hes not a sub-major or major impact, may want to talk with some of those Heisman guys.

by Gamecockrock on Oct 26, 2025 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I think calling Maddox and Lattimore equals in the running game is probably a little perverse...

based on one great Maddox performance against a gassed Vandy defense. But silver does have a point that perhaps the biggest difference with Lattimore is his receiving ability. After having watched his high-school footage, I was just waiting for him to have a breakout game catching the ball like he did in the first half against UK. This is going to be an aspect of his game that Spurrier will exploit more and more over the next few games.

by Gamecock Man on Oct 26, 2025 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions

well yea,

obviously when a player has an extra dimension as Lattimore does, it is going to be what makes him stand out the most from other players at his position… people could make the argument that Sanders is our best slot receiver option since he gives us the greatest WR Reverse option.

by Gamecockrock on Oct 26, 2025 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Big name players get compared to all kinds of guys before they prove themselves.

I don’t think you’re giving Maddox the credit he deserves. He is light years better than he was in the past. No one will compare him to anyone ‘cause before this year he hasn’t been very good. His running style has completely changed though, and he could very well be a starter on a lot of teams in good conferences.

Georgia’s defense stunk big time at the beginning of the year. Several teams worse than ours ran on them all day. It obviously took them some time to transition to their new defensive scheme. I don’t think comparing them now to what they were when they played us is fair.

I don’t think he was ever a real Heisman candidate. He’s only had one game over 100 yards rushing. People just like to talk up new players who are expected to do well, ‘cause it’s just something new to talk about, and it makes them feel like they’re witnessing history.

I hesitate to mention it, but Maddox’s yards per attempt is way, way higher than Lattimore’s. I realize a lot of things go into that. For one, Lattimore gets more tired since he carries it more, but still. Lattimore is good, but we’ll have to disagree about how much better he is than Maddox.

stuff 'bout stuff.

by silver82blade on Oct 27, 2025 12:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Im not taking ANYTHING

away from Maddox and his ability… but to say hes better than Lattimore is kinda insane. UGA’s defense didnt play poorly against us, they looked about as good as they have against the other teams they have shutdown, difference was Lattimore steamrolled them. Lattimore was a legitimate heisman candidate after the UGA game especially, as several sources had him among the top 5. And yes Maddox has averaged somewhere around 5.4 ypc, but Lattimore has averaged 4.4 and like you said has gotten the bulk of carries, leaving Maddox to carry it against the worn down defenses. Its not an abnormality to see the backup RB have more YPC than the starter for just that reason.

by Gamecockrock on Oct 27, 2025 8:21 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't think Maddox is better.

However, I don’t think there’s a huge difference. I don’t know how you can say “Maddox is a great RB”, and then say having Lattimore back would make a major impact. If Maddox is great, what is Lattimore? An automatic future Heisman winner? I can see you’re using caps. Know I’m not trying to tick you off. I’m just having a friendly debate.

Maddox’s is actually 5.8, according to ESPN’s stats.

stuff 'bout stuff.

by silver82blade on Oct 27, 2025 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

im not taking

offense to anything you write… im just using caps to clarify my stance.

But yes, in my eyes right now, I have no doubt that next year or Latti’s junior year, he will be a heisman frontrunner, and if he stays all 4 years, he will definitely have a Heisman Trophy.

by Gamecockrock on Oct 27, 2025 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, that's where we disagree I guess.

I think he has a shot, if he improves on one or two things in his game, but I don’t think he’s in the same league as a guy like Mark Ingram.

stuff 'bout stuff.

by silver82blade on Oct 27, 2025 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the biggest difference between Maddox and Lattimore is the consistency of Lattimore to get yardage. He has gotten close to 100 rushing yards in every game he has touched the ball, while Maddox, since he has gotten to USC, hasn’t been consistent in his performance at all. Lattimore also gets several yards after contact, and I don’t think any of our other backs can do that. Maddox has greatly improved from last year though in his running style and juking ability. I don’t think Maddox has the same impact that Lattimore does on the field.

by Carolina Cock-n-Fire on Oct 27, 2025 9:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Latti is back!

I think Lattimore is going to have a huge impact on the game this week. Latti is a dual threat back. Defenses have to worry about him running and receiving. It also appears that when he is in the game, there is a psychological effect that he brings to the table. The team and coaches appear to feel more confident knowing that he is in the game and can get the job done. Latti went out in the the UK game and they went to shambles. I do think we need to rotate Maddox in there every once and a while to give Latti a break and lower his chances of getting injured.

by Carolina Cock-n-Fire on Oct 27, 2025 8:56 AM EDT reply actions

THANK YOU!

finally someone else that notices the pep in our players steps when Latti is out on the field. When you have players, the caliber or Lattimore, Jeffery and what Garcia has become… when they are on the field, every player around them feels like they are an elite player as well.

by Gamecockrock on Oct 27, 2025 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. There definitely seems to be a psychological factor, there.

I think he’ll have a “Major impact” on the team this weekend and as the season progresses.
