I was over at a Troy message board, and when I asked what base offense and defense they ran, one dude said they ran a 4-2-5 on defense. If you look at their depth chart, though, they have three linebackers, so you might be right.

Either way, they say their defense is really bad, as you pointed out. Whatever team they played last week got almost 450 rushing yards on them. Looks like we caught them in the right year.

Their passing game worries me a bit, though.

This could be a high-scoring game.

True, but I'd take our team in a shoot out over theirs any day.

Their corners are 5’8", and 5’9". I’m not even sure it’s going to be a high scoring game. Spurrier will probably just ride the backs until it stops working. That will kill a lot of clock. Will they actually stop our backs? They may come back after that bad loss last week and get fired up for this one, but I’m dubious.

You're probably right...

They did almost beat Okl. St., though. They’re a dangerous team if they can get it going.

Granted, I don't know their injury situation, but I'd think that depth is an issue for them by this point in the year...

when they’re playing BCS-level competition. A lot of mid-majors like Troy have some solid players in the starting lineup but don’t have any quality depth. Comparing their depth to ours is kind of like comparing ours to Oklahoma or someone like that.

Some facts to chew on:

Looks like they have something of a freshman phenom, too. Their QB, Corey Robinson, has some garish numbers. Something to think about: He’s been sacked 20 times (just over twice a game), which isn’t too bad. But they’ve been playing a Sun Belt schedule. You’d think our D-line might be able to get to him, although Okie State only sacked him twice.

By comparison, Garcia’s been sacked 19 times - but again, our OL has been blocking SEC D-lines, so you would think they’ll be able to give Stephen some time in the pocket. And as someone mentioned, their defense is pretty porous. They give up a lot of points, and a lot of yards to both the pass and the run. Basically, we shouldn’t take our foot off the gas offensively. Rack up a bunch of points-if our D underperforms, it shouldn’t cost us the game.

Final fact: While Troy has a winning record, don’t be too impressed. They’ve only beaten one opponent by more than one score: A blowout over the 3-6 MTSU Blue Raiders. The Raiders’ 3 wins? Austin Peay, UL-Lafeyette, and a 28 point drubbing of UL Monroe….the same UL Monroe who, just three weeks ago, beat Troy by two scores.

Agh. I hate SN's shorthand editing system.

Here’s that second paragraph without the strikethru:

Seriously?

I was all set to take you seriously until you started with the if A > B > C…I’m not a rocket scientist, but you should know that the same team doesn’t show up every week. SC beats Bama and the next week they drop one to KY. Yes…we play in the Sun Belt and that’s our lot. That being said, if I were a betting man, I’d be broke this season. I believe in this program, but the depth and experience aren’t there this season, BUT…it won’t be a rout if you don’t bring your A game because they will play up to this team. When you recruit kids to a small program, games like this are what they sign for…The probability that SC wins is high and a possibility that TROY wins remains.

Hey!

Thanks for dropping by to discuss the game. I found your statement about these types of games being what your players signed for to be interesting. When Spurrier said something to that effect about either Southern Miss., or Furman, as to why Carolina shouldn’t overlook them, their fans said our game with them was the least important. All they cared about was their conference games. Maybe you all will give Carolina a better game if your players feel the same way you do. It should be fun either way. Football is football.

stuff 'bout stuff.

Seconded...

Thanks for swinging by. Why doesn’t SB Nation have a Troy blog? Seems like they have enough of a following. Very strange. But anyway, nice to have someone to provide a voice for the opposition.

To clarify, I wasn’t trying to use some sort of transitive logic to outright dismiss any chance of an upset. As you say, we are a team of highs and lows, and no South Carolina fan is foolish enough to speak/write in absolutes. My point was that numbers don’t lie. Troy stands to give up a lot of yards, as they have done all year, mostly to teams without our weapons. Troy does boast a high powered pass offense, and there-in lies the potential for them to rack up some points. And, as you said, USC has some intangible disadvantages: the letdown factor and the play-down-to-the-opposition factor. Carolina fans have seen both of these phenomena this year…to UK and Vandy respectively.

In summation, I agree wholeheartedly with your last statement: SC probably wins, Troy could win. But I maintain I never wrote anything that suggested otherwise!

(PS: Don’t dwell on the the whole MTSU>ULM>Troy tidbit. It was one of those little puff-piece factoids that sports columnists and the like will tack on the end of an article to give it some spice, but really amounts to little. Just pretend I never wrote it!)

That is true...

Conference games are what usually get the smaller conference teams their bowl chances. All games are important and the most important is the next one on the schedule. When you’re trying to get your national perception to be different from your conference perception, winning big OOC games is paramount. We haven’t won a big OOC game since Ok St in ‘07. We came close to beating LSU in ’08, but let it get away in the 4th qtr. I’m not saying this for the purpose of moral victory claims, but because of an expectation to win some of them because we can. So, is TROY a world-beater…? Not so much this season. Do I think they could, if the stars were to align on Saturday? Absolutely…

by trojanbrutha on Nov 17, 2025 11:53 AM EST reply actions

Yeah, well, if you guys are going to beat us you picked a great week.

Carolina is coming off a week they won their division for the first time ever in the SEC. We have our rivalry game coming up after you guys, followed by the SEC championship game. It’s a great time to catch us not paying attention. Plus, you guys are coming off a sound thumping. Teams typically regroup and give it their all after a really bad game. I think the stars are about as aligned as they can get for you guys.

stuff 'bout stuff.

I agree. I know we look like the better team on paper...

But this game worries me. Troy isn’t a team to be taken lightly, and I fear that we’ll do just that because we’ll see them as a cupcake sandwiched in between two of the biggest games of the year.

SOS said in his presser yesterday that we'd come out running Lattimore and no more 3 throws and out

I like it. Troy has the 84th rated rush defense in FBS. If we establish the run, we’ll be able to wear them out on D and keep their passing attack sidelined.

by Skulls and Spurs on Nov 17, 2025 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

As much as I hate it...

it’ll be simple, but effective. But, we may mix in some 3-4 to try to get more speed on the edges. Or drop a safety and add another LB for a 4-3 look. Then the corners are exposed…this will be a very challenging game, I hope…
