South Carolina Gamecocks Football vs. Troy Field Report | Leftover Hot Dog
Who saw that performance coming? Hopefully the team will be clicking on all cylinders for Clemson.
How gratifying was that? South Carolina came out focused against an inferior opponent and buried them. They didn't have to leave the starters in deep into the game. Lots of seniors got to play on senior day. This is what Gamecock fans have wanted to see against these type teams for years.
Report card: South Carolina 69, Troy 24 | Spur of the Moment
Oh, did I mention it's hate week?
The Gamecocks have a lot of momentum right now. Lattimore injuries have been the only thing to curb momentum this season. So long as he's healthy, South Carolina has been in good shape. We'll see if that continues, even somewhere as unfriendly as Death Valley.
Quick Impression: Gamecocks Football Beats Troy Easily | Leftover hot Dog
I would really like to see Lattimore nab that freshman record.
Latti now has 1,066 yards in 10 games, he becomes the first Gamecock to rush for 1,000 yards since 2000 (Derek Watson). His three touchdowns give him 17 for the season, pushing Lattimore past Harold Green for the single-season record. Lattimore is now one TD away from the SEC freshman record of 20 set by Tennessee's Reggie Cobb in 1987.
Troy-S.C. Notebook: Golden no longer on team | Dothan Eagle
Dude left the team before the game. Smart move. I guess we shouldn't be all that surprised, he was from Quitman, Ga after all. Seriously.
Gamecocks seniors proud to win first division title | The Post and Courier
There will be a lot of seniors to miss after this year. Here's an example of why:
Matthews approached Spurrier this week, lamenting the fact that he didn't redshirt as a true freshman. He's not ready for the end. Not yet, anyway.
Asked about senior day festivities this week, Matthews just sort of shrugged. He chose instead to talk about what's further ahead for the Gamecocks: Clemson and the SEC title game.
"We're not done yet," Matthews said. "We'll talk about what we did when the season's over."
New SEC East Bully: South Carolina Gamecocks | Saturday Down South
I wouldn't quite call us a bully, but this part is true enough.
If the Gamecocks let up, and allow Clemson to beat them, this season will never be as special as it should have been. I cannot even imagine the feeling and the Clemson fans if they were to beat the SEC east champion. South Carolina must finish the regular season 9-3.

Yeah, I'd still recruit him.
They can always suspend him, or kick him off the team later if he gets too big of an ego. That is upsetting, though. He might just be another one of those guys who never lives up to his billing, ’cause of off the field problems. If he already has an ego in high school, how focused will he be in college; off on his own, looking at himself on TV every week? It just makes you appreciate guys like Lattimore, and Taylor all that much more.

Of course you still recruit him
He’s the nation’s #1 ranked recruit in our backyard, he’s been called the best I’ve ever seen by multiple national recruiting analysts, every rumor says he’s favored us for awhile, and the first bad thing I’ve heard of him is he got a little too fired up celebrating sacks in a HS playoff game. Any coach that didn’t continue to press for his services would be criminally negligent.
If a HS kid is too exuberant in his celebrations, it is a more of a poor reflection on the coach than the kid.

Everyone knows he an absolute must-get. I don’t think saying it out loud is going to make much of a difference at this point. He’s going to be absolutely dominate; If the worst knock on him is that he celebrates too much, I’ll deal with it. We can work on that once he gets here.

I dont like when media make such a big deal of celebrating a big play
the kid is playing in the state playoffs, and hes dominating. If you want to ban players from celebrating their big plays, make it the guys in the NFL, not kids in college and high school playing for the fun of the game. The guys in the NFL are the professionals and they are the ones who should act like it. Yes I understand players can take celebrations too far sometimes, but just strutting around after you sack the QB or make a big hit is completely fine in my book… even for a dominant player like Clowney, it still feels like its his first big play every time he does it.

I agree
I dont see anything here but Trav clucking a bit. Jadaveon may well have been coached to show emotion to keep his unit/team fired up, and went overboard. Based on excessive celebrating alone - and not a whiff of trouble out of Rock Hill - Im unwilling to call it poor character.
And I don’t know if I’d want to compare my 18 year old behavior to that of Marcus Lattimore … our # 21 displays a remarkable brand of poise and maturity.
I hope Jadaveon commits to being a Gamecock. I imagine he either starts or sees huge p.t. as a freshman on any squad he chooses.

There's good sportsmanship, and bad sportsmanship.
Some people have empathy for the other team, and others don’t. Some are prideful in themselves, and others are humble. It can say a lot about a person’s personality, and what we can expect from him off the field.
stuff 'bout stuff.

Plenty of time to learn valuable lessons
on the practice fields, the classrooms and on Saturdays in the SEC. I think if Jadaveon were a bad kid, we’d be a little gunshy regardless of his talent. If he is a little too full of himself, let’s hope he doesnt need as much tough love a a certain quarterback from Tampa, whose turned out to be pretty ok in his Junior campaign.

Yeah, I say we should withhold judgment for now.
Is it a possible cause for concern? Sure. But plenty of young guys show a lot of emotion on the field. Eric Norwood did. Tim Tebow did. Do we consider them “character issue” players? No. Let the kid have some fun, tell him to reel it in if he gets out of order, and go from there.
Might not be a coincidence that Haney has a friend on Greenville’s coaching staff.

I like Travis Haney, but blogging about a high school kid's antics is silly.
Clowney is the #1 recruit in America playing for a state championship in his senior year of high school. He’s 18 years old. I wasn’t at the game, and perhaps Clowney was a bit too animated, but c’mon, Travis. Get over it.

That's kind of how I feel.
The vast majority of players would do the very same thing. Does that make them all “character problems”? It’s really kind of absurd, when you think about it.
Look, I love how mature Marcus Lattimore is. But he’s an exceptional case. Very few players are as reserved as Lattimore is after making a big play. And heck, even Lattimore was jumping around doing the gator chomp after we beat UF. These are kids performing at the top of their game on the biggest stage. Can’t expect them to show no emotion.

There's a big difference between celebrating and taunting.
Much like obscenity, I know it when i see it. Maybe Haney is making a mountain out of a molehill, but I personally trust a journalist a Haney’s caliber to make an accurate report. If it were just normal high school celebrating I doubt Haney would have taken the time to write such a lengthy response to it.
I have never understood the excuse making for players, both amateur and professional, who think they need to denigrate their opponent to add a little more luster to their own accomplishments. I think silver82blade is right (my God, what am I saying?) when he says that you can extrapolate a person’s overall character from situation like this. I’m not willing to say he has a character problem from a sample size of exactly one, but it’s not a non-issue, either.

No,
but then again, Lattimore’s actions weren’t bad enough to merit practically an entire blog post by Travis Haney. I’m not convinced Clowney has character issues either - at least yet. Here’s what I said about him:
I’m not willing to say he has a character problem from a sample size of exactly one, but it’s not a non-issue, either.
And:

Fair enough...
But by your logic, Lattimore’s gator chomp shouldn’t be a “non-issue, either,” and if that’s the case, then I respectfully disagree. My point is just that these are kids. They get wrapped up in the moment and do crazy things. That doesn’t mean that they’re bad kids. Some of them are, but only a very few of them.
I frankly think that the fact that Haney has a friend who suffered at the hands of Clowney may have more than a little to do with this. I like Haney’s writing as much as the next guy, but this column was a little uncharacteristic of him.
Garnet and Black Attack: A Blog By and For Gamecocks Fans.
by Gamecock Man on Nov 22, 2025 10:31 AM EST up reply actions
Yeah, I can agree with that.
If Haney didn’t have a friend on the Greenville staff this column might never have been written. It just raises my hackles a little bit when I hear people dismiss a kid’s actions just because he’s a kid. All my life I’ve heard people make excuses for kids just because they’re young and I would think “I’m the same age as this kid and I know the difference from right and wrong. Why does that kid deserve a pass?”
When I think back to middle school, high school, and undergrad, the kids who were thoughtless jerks in middle school were still thoughtless jerks in high school and college and I’m sure they will continue to be thoughtless jerks as adults. Past behavior is the best indicator of future behavior.
And as far as the Marcus vs. Jadeveon comparison, the overall impression painted of Marcus is that of a humble person. There have been multiple reports from different sources of his character. All I have to go on for Clowney is this one column in which Haney basically says that Clowney went out of his way to rub his opponent’s nose in the fact that they were being destroyed by a wide margin. It’s just one report from one game from a biased source, but it still counts for something. But you’re right, perhaps this behavior isn’t indicative of Clowney in general. Even I think you can’t hold someone to such a high standard 100% of the time.

Everything you're saying makes sense to a certain degree.
If there’s anything we can both agree on, it’s that we probably need more evidence than an article written by a biased observer before making any judgment calls about Clowney. Everyone deserves to be given the benefit of the doubt every once in a while. You may be right that past behavior is a good indicator of future behavior, but at the same time some people need to make a few mistakes in order to learn to do better. I’m sure that if Clowney’s attitude becomes a problem for him, his coaches will get on him about it. Hopefully he’ll be one of the guys who learns.

One game shouldn’t condemn the guy to not being able to play here, but I was just saying it isn’t a great start. I also agree that making mistakes is the best way to learn. You can’t expect people to be perfect from the start.

The point is it's kind of a slander
to imply that he has an attitude problem with nothing more than ‘I think he celebrated too much in that playoff game when he sacked my friend’s quarterback.’
If he was celebrating too much, that is a poor reflection on the HS coaches more than the kid.

Yeah, I caught that, and was actually really disappointed in him.
Then again, I do junk all the time that makes me disappointed in myself. Everyone messes up. I do think it was wrong to taunt them like that. Just ‘cause a lot of other people were doing it doesn’t make it right either. I think that was the only reason he did do it, but that’s not an excuse. Whatever the reason, we can’t expect him to be humble and kind all the time. No one is perfect. As long as Clowney, Lattimore, or whoever else doesn’t start bad mouthing opponents, coaches, or teammates to the media; get a big head, and get into criminal activity off the field; or, make a habit of being rude on the field, then they should be fine.

I personally liked it.
There’s a line when it comes to trash talking, taunting, etc. I don’t think that crossed it, and there are several other similar actions that I think are perfectly fine in the heat of action. The referees generally know where that line is and will throw a penalty when something is excessive. I have a hard time believing, especially in a high school game, that Clowney was so out of line if there weren’t penalties called. Haney noted that one time there should have been a penalty. Who knows? We can go on all day about this. We’re not dealing with gentlemenly scholars out there on the field for the most part. Those guys usually don’t make very good football players.
by Skulls and Spurs on Nov 22, 2025 1:46 PM EST up reply actions
I'd take a gentlemanly scholar over a loudmouth with a bad attitude any day.
At least the ones who play by the rules get on the field. I don’t like the attitudes at all; but, at the least, I hope it doesn’t get out of hand, especially with a five star recruit. I’ve seen flags thrown on just words being exchanged, with no physical interaction. Fifteen yard penalties hurt.

I never made that comparison.
Garcia jawing at Will Hill after running him over for a huge TD in an SEC East title game is in no way indicative of him being a “loudmouth with a bad attitude.” The bottom line is that It’s not nearly as cut and dry as it’s being made out to be on here.

A bit disappointing
to see the Cocks play this incredibly dominant game so late in the season, and basically drop from 17 to 18. It’s obviously the result of Nebraska tumbling and a few other minor shuffles in the ranks of the 2 loss clubs, but I had hoped we could enter the Clemson game ranked at 15, and (hopefully) winning, would be at least 13 or 14 going into Atlanta - just for the visual. Alas, it does not look like its’ to be - no being deal; rankings are pure cosmetics. And we were fortunate not to fall very far after the whuppin the Razorbacks put on us three weeks ago.

Another bummer
to read Trav talk about Kenny Miles needing to transfer down. Yes, he had a very unfortunate fumble. Yes, Sr. Brian Maddox has clearly emerged as the number two back. Perhaps I’ve been too high on him, but as a Freshman, Kenny rushed for 600+ behind an OL line that is not playing nearly as well as it is this year.
So, I hate the idea its even being whispered that # 31 should transfer after his sophomore year. We have some quality RB in the program (like Shon Carson), but with Maddox graduating and Giles already transferring we need to enter 2011 with a consensus back-up and I hope its Kenny whose been a terrific team player. I predict good carries from him in 2011.

I don't think he transfers.
The back-up spot is his if he works hard and regains his 2009 form. He needs to do what Maddox has done and bust his butt to lock down that no. 2 spot.

I really question whether he can excel in the zone read offense.
I"m not saying he can’t, but he hasn’t displayed that ability yet. His strength last year was getting to the hole very quickly. He runs hard. Unfortunately, the zone read isn’t about busting it straight at the 2 hole or 5 hole - you’re making a read. Kenny hasn’t shown he’s good at that to this point.

I really hope he doesn't.
Shon Carson looks like he could be an amazing compliment to Lattimore, but there’s also a good chance he’ll go pro this year (MLB). As good of a running back as he is, he’s an even better baseball player, and I’ve heard he might have problems qualifying academically. I really hope we get this kid on campus, but it’s not a guarantee, and Miles definitely needs to stick around if that’s the case.
Of course, I’m a big fan of Miles anyway. I think most Gamecock fans are pulling for him to do well. He’s just been having a sophomore slump (much like Gilmore in some respects). Maddox has done a great job in relieving Lattimore, so I hope Miles can step up and do the same next year.
by RumblinFish on Nov 22, 2025 1:48 PM EST up reply actions
I don't even blame him that much for the fumble.
He took a fierce shot to the elbow from a helmet that dazed the defender. Miles had both hands on the ball, so it’s not like he wasn’t using proper form. It was just an enormous hit in the exact right spot. I don’t know a lot of backs who would’ve held on to that.
