Garnet-Black Game and USC at Vandy Open Thread

I'm back, Gamecocks fans. Gamecock Man is flying high after passing his exams (I'll resume in-depth posting this coming week), and the Gamecocks are soaring, as well, after a Friday victory at Vanderbilt in a pitchers duel. We go for the series today at 3:00. Sam Dyson and Jack Armstrong (4-0 3.93) start. Come by and chat about the game.

We can also talk about the Spring Game. I take these things with a grain of salt, but I am curious to see a few things today, particularly Shawn Elliott's zone-read, Jarvis Giles, and Stephen Garcia-Conner Shaw.

I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that he is out with a hip flexor. The only scholarship tailbacks playing today will be Brain Maddox and Kenny Miles.

seems like Dyson

is always slow out the gate, must correct if he wants to get to MLB one day as he has the stuff and will excel in minors but needs to improve his first 30 pitches.

oh, other story with this Vandy game today

is Tanner sits at 999 career wins after USC got game 1 last night so if SC beats Vandy today then Coach Ray Tanner gets his 1000th career win in his first try.

Very true.

Vanderbilt is a quality team. If we manage to win the series and get Tanner his 1,000th career win, this will easily be our best series of the season so far.

No.

Garcia is starting his first drive right now. Plus, the second team quarterback usually plays the second team defense in the Spring game. And this year it’s more like the 3rd team defense.

Garcia will have to pull a Tommy Beacher for Shaw to see anything but mop up duty in the first 6 games. After that, all bets are off.

Plus, Spurrier already said he was going to try to be meaner from here on out. Although, he’s never seemed to be particularly affectionate to Garcia.

But Spurrier doesn’t seem happy with Garcia this spring. I would have liked to have seen Garcia step up more.

No, he didn't. But Garcia seems to have done something that has particularly put Spurrier off this spring. That is, not working hard enough.

The offensive units played well today...

Granted, they were playing against a depleted defensive roster, but still. I think we’re seeing progress of the offensive front, just as we did throughout the season last year. I’m personally sold on Ellis Johnson always having the defense ready, so as long as the offense is making progress, I’m happy.

Still, not sure if we should make too much out of it.

I’ll have more to say tomorrow.
